A group of conservatively dressed businesswomen chatted in a Tokyo hotel lobby recently, awaiting the start of a conference planned to raise the profile of women in Corporate Japan.
Things took a surreal turn as a parade of tall, scantily clad beauty queens suddenly made their way past toward their own gathering: the Miss International pageant. The Prince Hotel's planners seemed to miss the irony of placing the two events -- one celebrating women's brains, the other their sex appeal -- side by side.
It was an apt metaphor for what many women experience in this nation of 127 million.
The desire to be taken as seriously collides with those in the executive suite who still see women as ornaments to a business culture ruled by men in gray suits.

SHE may not be a household name just yet, but Blue Mountains babe Danielle Byrnes is about to follow in the high-heels of Jennifer Hawkins and Erin McNaught and hit the international pageant stage.
The Zoo Weekly regular jets to Japan next Saturday to represent her homeland in the Miss International contest.
With just 18 months modelling under her size 8 belt, the 20-year-old stunner is hoping the quest will provide a boost to her career locally.
The comp is widely regarded as the fourth largest beauty pageant in the world - one step below the Miss Universe comp which catapulted Hawkins to fame three years ago.
Could a stint on a travel show be next for the globetrotting up-and-comer?

A 2005 graduate of Gilbert High School was crowned Miss Arizona American Coed during a pageant July 28 in Tucson.
Melody Knudson, 20, a junior majoring in intercultural studies at Biola University in California, said she is proud to be the winner because judges focused on elements that make a well-rounded person, such as poise, interview skills and personal confidence.
“It’s not a beauty pageant,” she said.
The American Coed Program has operated pageants since 1983 and has awarded more than $12 million to contestants nationwide, according pageant Web sites.
Knudson said she worked hard to prepare for the pageant.
“Because of the nature of this pageant, it means a lot because it means I have achieved the standards of this program,” she said.
Knudson will compete for the national title in November.
