Miss Trinidad & Tobago UK 2007, 5th Anniversary Scarcely will the sounds of the Notting Hill Carnival 2007 have ebbed away, when London will come alive once again with the pulsating rhythms & splendour associated with the multicultural twin Caribbean islands of Trinidad & Tobago, as the Miss Trinidad & Tobago UK pageant and cultural showcase gets underway on Saturday 29 September 2007. Under the distinguished patronage of Her Excellence Mrs Glenda Morean-Phillip, High Commissioner of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago to London, it will be held at the elegant Porchester Hall, London W2.
The Miss Trinidad & Tobago UK pageant started in September 2003 and has been held annually since. It will also be celebrating its 5th anniversary. In previous years, it has generated a lot of interest, attracting thousands of nationals from Trinidad & Tobago, other Caribbean islands and the UK, through the website’s online voting competition, Miss Website Queen. The purpose of this event is to select a UK based Trinbagonian beauty to be a cultural ambassador representing Trinidad & Tobago in the UK, which may also result in international appearances.
Official DutiesThese will include attending the World Travel Market, the premier world travel industry event held annually in London at ExCel. This year, it will be held 12-15 November, 2007. She will be supporting the Trinidad & Tobago exhibit. In addition, she will appear at the Trinidad & Tobago Windsor Carnival Race Day, the Yorkshire Trinidad & Tobago Race Handicap organised by a fellow Trinidadian Mr Hugo Gunning. She will also carry out charitable duties both here and in the Caribbean. The Delegates and the Structure of the Pageant and Cultural Showcase
The selected delegates are between the ages of 18-27 years. They are being taken on a journey of self discovery and intellectual development as they participate in holistic workshops. These workshops comprise of dance movement and exercise, deportment, make-up, hair & beauty, protocol and etiquette, and chorography training, courtesy of Carivog International UK. These workshops aim to lift the participants’ self-esteem, boost their confidence and further strengthen their ability to cope with life’s challenges and their growth into mature women. What they learn and develop as part of the workshops is something that will see them through for the rest of their lives and to hopefully enable them to achieve their full potential as young women. Prior to the finals, in addition to the workshops, the ten finalists are required to attend various guest appearance activities and also carry out a research project. This project is to be based on the district of Trinidad & Tobago they are representing. The results are to be delivered as a written piece of work and on Finals night, in an oral form of their choosing e.g. poem, singing, speech, in addition to the other activities they will be taking part in on the night. Awards will be made for the best written projects. After the finals, the applicants will deliver and display their projects at various schools as part of Black History month. The winner will receive to name a few: a prize trip to Trinidad & Tobago, entry into the 2008 top model finals and take part in the Mahogany Group Bridal Show 2008 held in London. In addition, she will receive a cover shoot and a two page spread courtesy of International Women’s Month Magazine as well as jewellery by Kyles Collection.
The Grand Finals Evening – Saturday 29th September 2007 It will be a night to be remembered as patrons are welcomed by steel pan music and beautiful ladies dressed in carnival costumes courtesy of Poison UK, the London based carnival band and one of the supporters of the pageant. The ten beauties, of part or full Trinidad & Tobago parentage and resident in the United Kingdom, will parade in carnival costumes, traditional wear, swimsuits and evening gowns from designers based in either Trinidad & Tobago or the United Kingdom. They will be representing both selected areas of Trinidad & Tobago and their United Kingdom area of residence. The finalists will be judged on the basis of how they present themselves as well as the two minute presentation they will make on the night. The presentation, which could be a verbal or vocal one, is to be based on the district of Trinidad & Tobago they are representing. The evening’s cultural showcase and entertainment will also mark the bicentennial anniversary of the abolishment of slavery in the UK and the anniversary of Trinidad & Tobago becoming a Republic, in the form of dance and music. Whilst still in the planning stages, it is anticipated that it will be a blend of live performances reflective of the cultural diversity of Trinidad & Tobago, including: African dance, soca and steel band music and the dance that is currently very popular in Trinidad & Tobago, as is the rest of the world, salsa. Artistes from both the United Kingdom and Trinidad & Tobago are anticipated to be participating. Two of the confirmed artistes are Jahson performing his new single “Gimme Gimme” and Soul Logic. The London based, award winning Ebony Steelband will also be performing on the night. The band was honoured to perform at the 2006 FIFA World Cup stages in Germany, where Trinidad & Tobago national football represented the islands for the first time.
Additionally, the pageant will be celebrating its 5th Anniversary on the night. Therefore, it will be a night to remember as the past and present beauties take part in the celebrations. As with previous years, this year’s event will see a host of dignitaries and VIPs in the audience.
