Eleven beauties from Ghanaian communities across the world stormed the National Theatre last Friday to vie for the first ever Ghana’s Homecoming Queen crown.

The event brought together contestants of Ghanaian origin from the United Kingdom, Italy, Holland, Canada and Germany.

At the end of it all, it was Pearl Akosua Serwaa Boadu from Holland who stood tall among the ten other contestants to take the crown as Ghana Homecoming Queen 2007.

Gladys Owusu Amponsah and Josephine Akosua Nimo both from Germany were the first and second runners-up respectively.

The pageant was quite different from others in that there were no talent hunt and question & answer segments. Neither were there prizes announced or given.

CEO of Baskets & beyond, Nana Tannaa Takyi-Appiah told The Showbiz that the pageant was not so much about prizes but the need for the winner to be an ambassador to raise funds for orphans and other vulnerable children.

After an opening choreography, the contestants returned on stage to introduce themselves. Most of them started in the languages of the countries they represented while others began with Twi.

Their next appearance was in elegant evening wear by Ghanaian designers as they gave reasons for participating in the pageant. For most of them it was on the need to help orphans and the vulnerable in society.

This, one would say was apt as the theme for the pageant was “raising funds to support orphans and other vulnerable children.” It was time to exhibit their dancing skills as the contestants took turns to dance to highlife music. This was one exciting segment as most of the girls proved that they were truly Ghanaian, dancing beautifully to the various tunes that were dished out.

Special awards went to Pearl Boadu (Holland) as Miss Glamorous, Stephanie Adu (UK) as Miss Congeniality and Sandra Agyeman (Holland) as Miss Eloquent.

Dan Nettey, Kontihene and Ebo’o were in the house and treated the sparse audience to some spectacular performances. There was also a DJ on hand to begin the show and interlace the various segments with good music.

One would have expected that after the five finalists had been chosen, they would be taken through at least a question each from the judges to determine who deserved to take what position but that was not to be.

MC Kwesi Kyei Darkwa was as usual in his element. Known for smoothly hosting other high profile pageants and events, this was just another small catch for him. As the producer of the event, he handled it with ease and involved the audience by interacting with them on various topics.

The event, which formed part of activities marking Ghana’s Golden Jubilee celebration was organised by Baskets and Beyond under the auspices of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Ministry of Chieftaincy and Culture and Ministry of Tourism and Diasporan Relations. / ModernGhana.Com
