HONG KONG CHINA

Hong Kong China and Ecuador have both been fast-tracked into the Miss World Semi-Final as joint winners of the ‘Beauty With A Purpose’ Award, it has just been announced during the 57th Miss World Final show.  They were presented with their trophies by Maki Mandela, daughter of Nelson Mandela.

This is the first time in Miss World history that there have been joint winners of this prestigious award which recognises the achievement of both the contestants and their licence holders for their outstanding charity work in the community.

As a result there will be six Fast Track Semi-Finalists in total. With 10 more to be added to the Semi-Final line-up by the judges in the coming minutes, 16 contestants rather than the usual 15 will contest tonight’s Miss World Semi-Final.

Hong Kong China, Ka Yi Cheung, has been helping old people, regularly working at retirement homes. She also has strong ties with UNICEF, doing so much to help raise money for this vitally important United Nations children’s fund.

Over the years, the Miss World licence holder in Hong Kong China has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for charity, a truly remarkable and praiseworthy achievement.

Ecuador, Valeska Saab Gomez, has been doing similarly marvellous work in her country, helping people who are suffering from the terrible condition of itchiosis, which results in the skin being covered in scales.

Educating others that the condition is genetic and not contagious has been one essential element of her work, with the aim of ensuring that the sufferers are not excluded from the rest of society.

The other key element is to raise money so that they can have access to treatment creams.  A fundraising concert which she and her licence holder organised attracted a sensational 50,000 people.

The three ‘Beauty With A Purpose’ finalists who just missed out were Indonesia, Jamaica and Sweden.

Mrs Julia Morley, who initiated the ‘Beauty With A Purpose’ Award specifically to recognise efforts of charity and good deeds, said:  “The standard of work submitted by this year’s contestants was truly amazing.

“In the end we simply could not separate Hong Kong China and Ecuador and we felt that it was only fair that they share the award.  Many congratulations to both of them.”  /missworld.tv
