Newly crowned Miss Trinidad and Tobago, Universe, Anya Ayoung-Chee, says she is ready for the challenge of getting prepared for the Miss Universe competition, which is just a mere four months away. The 26-year-old, who recently started as a graphic designer with Above Studios, said "young women all have the challenge to multitask and take on many responsibilities. In being a Miss Trinidad and Tobago it is a challenge to do both, but I am ready". A confident Ayoung-Chee was speaking after winning the crown on Sunday at the Zen nightclub in Port of Spain. The Maraval beauty along with Gabrielle Walcott of Petit Valley was chosen to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the Miss World from a field of five other contestants at the Miss T&T finals. To the sounds of African drums, the seven contestants danced their way on stage in native wear at the show's start. This was followed by the swimsuit and evening gown categories.
Miss World T&T 2007 Valene Maharaj, who placed fourth and took the Queen of the Caribbean title at last year's pageant in China, co-hosted the show-which was sponsored by the Tourism Development Company (TDC)-alongside Adrian Raymond from the local pageant company. Ayoung-Chee, 26, will be competing against over 80 contestants at the 57th Miss Universe beauty pageant, scheduled to be held at the Diamond Bay Resort in Nha Trang, Vietnam, on July 15. "I feel really honoured because it's really an unparalleled experience for any women to represent her country," she said. Meantime, Walcott will be the country's representative in the 58th Miss World beauty pageant carded for October 4, 2008, at the Ukraine National Palace in Kiev, Ukraine. "I absolutely can't wait. I think it is very exciting," said the 24-year-old, who has just returned to Trinidad from a year of studying Visual and Theatre Arts. "I am surprised, honoured, excited, thrilled. I just felt blessed," Judges for the event were make-up artist Yvonne Popplewell, radio presenter Dale Enoch, jewelry designer Jeniele McCarthy Sinanan, TV6 head of news Dominic Kalipersad, former Miss World Giselle La Ronde West and fashion designer Bobby Ackbarali. /trinidadexpress.com
