Billijane Gallant is competing at the 2008 Miss World Canada pageant for the right to help a vital charity. Beauty pageants are no longer about the contestant smearing Vaseline on her teeth and asking for world peace. The women participating in the 2008 Miss World Canada competition are beauties with a purpose. This motto is precisely why Billijane Gallant, a 20-year-old from Pictou Landing, decided she wanted to represent Nova Scotia and compete for the title of Miss World Canada 2008. "This competition is about more than looks," she said Saturday during an interview at Fibbers Pub and Eatery. "I love the fact that the winner gets to travel and do work for a children's charity. It would be such a great experience." Gallant was at the New Glasgow pub to raise money to attend the competition in Toronto. Fibbers is also Gallant's official sponsor.
The Dalhousie nursing student will fly to Toronto next month to take part in a week of competitions including, swim wear, evening gown, talent and people's choice. She is up against 46 other delegates from across the county, two from Nova Scotia. "It's going to be a tough competition," admits Gallant's grandfather, Neil MacDonald. "But she has a lot of talents other girls don't" Gallant has a track record for being an active volunteer in her community. She has volunteered for the Terry Fox run and Relay for Life. And when she was a student at North Nova Education Centre she organized a campaign to give underprivileged girls the opportunity to buy prom dresses. Gallant says she is ready for the competition. She has already purchased her evening gown and has been practising the violin for the talent portion. The winner of Miss World Canada will go on to compete in the Miss World competition in September. She will also become the spokesperson for SOS Children's Villages Canada. Gallant is asking for your help. The delegate's place in the competition depends on the public's vote. Gallant is asking the people of Pictou County to help push her into the top 15 by voting online at www.missworldcanada.com. /ngnews.ca
