The winner of the 2008 Miss Viet Nam pageant in Hoi An this month will be the ambassador of a public charity for the poor sponsored by the Viet Nam Bank for Investment and Development (BIDV).
The bank has donated VND35 billion (US$2.1 million) to the Charity Fund for Community, Social Security and Poor People. The theme of this year's contest is an exhortation to people to live in a way that is friendly to their social and natural environments. The bank will also donate VND2.4 billion ($143,000) for building a new school, helping disadvantaged people, and awarding scholarships to school students in Quang Nam Province, where Hoi An is situated.
The finals of the pageant will be held at Hoai River Square on Sunday. It will be the 11th edition of the prestigious biennial beauty pageant organised by Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper. The contest began with a first qualifying round held in April in provinces and cities around the country. The second round in July-August saw contests in the north, south and central regions where more competitors fell by the wayside. Thirty girls qualified for the finals that began on August 19. Besides Miss Viet Nam and the first and second runners-up, the other crowns on offer are Miss Earth, Miss Sea, Miss Photogenic, and Miss Friendly with prizes also offered for the Best Ao dai, Best Skin, Best Performance and Best Answer. /english.vietnamnet.vn
