Five local ladies will take the 435-mile trek to Laredo to represent their respective cities and counties in the Miss Texas USA pageant Sunday. Competing are: Amber Pickett (Miss Longview) of Gilmer, Maggie Samford (Miss Panola County) of Timpson, Melissa Bergermann of Rusk, Bridget McDonald of Tatum and Wendy Barber of White Oak.

For 21-year-old Wendy Barber, this is a dream that has been a struggle to attain. Rhonda Barber, Wendy Barber's mother, said Wendy Barber won her age group title in a "Royal Miss Four States" pageant when she was 5 and never stopped dreaming of competing again. When she hit her high school years, however, Wendy Barber went through "the awkward teen phase," according to her mother and dealt with acne, braces and weight gain.

Wendy Barber said she always used to watch pageants and tell her parents that one day it would be her on stage, but her perspective changed during that time.

"I just never imagined that I would get to the point that I could do this," Wendy Barber said.

When she was in 10th grade, Wendy Barber decided to make an effort to lose the weight and achieved her goal over the summer, according to her mother. Rhonda Barber said the experience is an example of how her daughter goes after most goals.

"She sees what she wants and when she reaches for it, she usually attains it," Rhonda Barber said.

Wendy Barber has been in Laredo since last Sunday, preparing for the pageant.

"It's really exciting, but our feet are killing us," Wendy Barber said, adding that the contestants have been in four-inch heels for eight to 10 hours a day all week. Read more from the source/Local women take beauty queen dreams to pageant
