THERE SHE is, Miss America. Well not yet and maybe not ever. Miss New Jersey claims she is being blackmailed: Either she relinquishes her crown or embarrassing photos will be released.

The latest scandal to hit the beauty pageant world is a reminder to young people: Be careful what you post online.

Amy Polumbo, the reigning Miss New Jersey, has been making the media rounds telling the public that the still unreleased photos do not show her doing anything untoward -- no nudity, pornography or underage drinking.

Polumbo says these are photos from college days.Her lawyer says it's the captions accompanying these photos that are compromising. 

Since we have not seen the photographs, it is impossible to know whether the photos, the captions or the combination is damaging. What is clear is that pictures posted on the Internet -- even to sites users believe are only accessible to friends -- have a life of their own.

In an electronic age, there is no safe place for potentially embarrassing photographs. The average teen does not anticipate where life will take her. But a harmless photo at a party, clowning around with friends or something slightly suggestive, can come back to haunt years later.

While there is a certain silliness about making Miss America's plight news while the world is plagued by terrorism, sectarian violence and war, there is nothing silly about blackmail. Recently, beauty pageants have been rocked by scandals.

People who are willing to be judged on a stage must realize their private lives may also be subject to equal scrutiny. Heavy is the head that wears the crown or, in this case, tiara. Read more from the source North Jersey Media
